The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Kenya serves vulnerable populations in the Turkana and Garissa regions as well as in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

The IRC implements programs in the areas of comprehensive primary health care, nutrition, protection, peace building, water and sanitation and hygiene (WASH), HIV/AIDS prevention, response to gender based violence, disaster risk reduction (DRR), livelihoods and governance.

Description

The Mental Health Nurse reports directly to the Mental Health Officer.
He/she will be expected to work within the integrated community health program and collaborate with the
Clinical Services, Environmental Health, Nutrition and HIV/AIDS sectors to implement the following activities.

Key Responsibilities

    Identify and define mental health problems and needs of the refugees and, provide technical advice on all cases of psychiatric disorders.
    Oversee and conduct mental health assessments, diagnose and plan individual case management of psychiatric patients in the camp and refer accordingly.
    Develop nursing care plans for psychiatric patients admitted into the ward and liaise treatment plans with the Mental Health Officer
    Participate in developing community networks to support mental health patients in the community.
    Provide psychiatric support through use of individual or group counseling and psychotherapy.
    Train mental health assistants, Community Health Promoters and other groups exposed to persons with mental health disorders
    Supervise mental health assistants and ensure that data records for all the patients attended at the clinics are well kept
    Compile weekly and monthly reports.
    Conduct community education to create awareness so as to initiate community participation as a PHC approach.
    Participate in intra and inter-program meetings as well as general staff meetings
    Liaise with other implementing partners within the refugee camp in advocacy for mental health clients
    Identify and liaise with opinion and religious leaders in dealing with people with selected mental disorders.

Minimum Requirements:
    Diploma in nursing from a recognized nurse training institution,
    Certificate or Diploma in community psychiatric nursing.
    Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya and have a practicing license.
    Previous experience in working within a community setting desirable
    Experience of working in a resource poor setting and/or camp environment is an added advantage
    Language preferences: Fluency in Turkana/ Somali an added advantage.
    At least 2 years experience working in complex, multifaceted, community health program.
    Strong communication skills: oral: written and presentation skills.
    Similar experience in a humanitarian setting is desirable
    Should be a team player and culturally sensitive
    Ability to work and live in difficult environmental conditions
