Entertainment and sports is now big business, and Kenyans
are getting a huge pie of this lucrative cake. We have compiled a list of ten
Kenyan celebrities that we think are the richest of all times. Sure, we haven’t
gone through their accounts, but through following some of the deals they are
involved in, we can authoritatively report on Kenya’s top ten richest
celebrities. In no particular order, here the first five, be sure to catch the rest here.
1. Paul Tergat.
Paul Tergat, a veteran long distance runner, has been most
successful in the 5,000m, 10,000m, and the marathon. He has won many athletic
diamond league competitions, but sadly, the Olympic gold medal eluded him. In
the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, he was beaten by less than one hundredths of a
second in the
10,000m by his erstwhile competitor, Ethiopian Gabre Salessie. That
was a loss that was hard to bear. We think that the prize money he has earned
in many competitions, plus his endorsement deals in the Johnny Walker ad
campaign, are bringing him good income.
His net worth: We
think he would be worth anywhere above 50
million shillings.
2. Samuel Wanjiru.
The deceased athlete was the highest earning Kenyan
marathoner, with an endorsement deal from Nike rumored to be round 200 million shillings.
He also commanded an appearance fee of at least 5 million shillings from every
marathon. His yearly earnings could easily have reached 300 million shillings.
Even though deceased, he had a lot of property investments, wealth that his
next of in would be sure to enjoy.
His net worth: 500
million shillings.
3. Jaguar.
Jaguar is more of a businessman than a singer. He has a
garage, a taxi company, and a host of other businesses. The kigeugeu hit singer
is sure on a roll.
His net worth: We
think he could be grossing well over 50 million shillings yearly.
4. Dennis Oliech.
Dennis Oliech is the highest paid footballer in East and Central Africa. Assuming he gets even $10,000 (Kshs.
850,000) per week, his total earnings per week could be close to 4 million
shillings. He is however not known to have any other investments.
Earnings: 4 million
per month.
5. Esther Wahome.
Before the arrival of the new age gospel musicians, there
were gospel musicians who chimed their audiences. One such is Esther Wahome,
known for her hit song ‘Kuna dawa’. She is one of the only few Kenyan musicians
to have sold more than a million albums. Assuming she got 20 percent royalty
from the albums selling at 500 shillings, then she might have netted in 100
million shillings. This is besides her other investments, and prize money from
the beauty pageant competitions she took part in.
All time Earnings:
100 million shillings.
