At the end of the Africa- Japan conference on Monday,
Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, said that his country would shift its
focus on Africa from ‘aid’ to ‘trade and
investment.’ As China’s engagement
in Africa has soared, Japan
has been relegated to the sidelines. However, many in Africa
and the West also
accuse China
of being the ‘new imperialist’. In an article in the Financial times in March, Nigeria central bank Governor Lamido Sanusi said
that Africa be ‘cautious’ of its engagement with China,
as China was slowly killing
‘Africa’s nascent industries’.
