The Joint Admissions
Board- JAB, has lowered the cut off points for the 2012 KCSE students to 61
points (B grade) for male students and 59 (B- grade) points for female
students. For the 2011 candidates, the cut off points were 63 and 61 points for
male and female students respectively. Students who have a disability will be
admitted, as long as they get a C+ grade. Equally, students from marginalized
and arid areas with a C+ and above will also be admitted.
A total of about 53,000
students will find places in Kenya’s public universities, and
increase of 11,000 from the previous year. The criteria for selection of
courses will be weighted cluster points plus the overall
aggregate points. JAB
chairperson, JKUAT vice chancellor, Prof Mabel Imbuga, made the announcement on
Monday, May 13. Moi
University will admit the highest
number of students.
However, Private
universities have opposed the decision by JAB, arguing that a new admissions
body, comprising of both public and private universities, needs to streamline all
admissions to public and private universities.
