Does Obama Africa tour leave Kenya as the loser?

In a Press Statement by the White House, President Obama is set to visit Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania from 26 June to July 3. Each will be rewarded for its democratic virtues. Kenya seems to be the biggest loser, Is it?
Not even a relatively peaceful election earlier this year is enough to tempt Obama back to his ancestral homeland. The big problem is the winner, Uhuru Kenyatta, who is facing charges of crimes against humanity at the international criminal court (no matter that the US is yet to sign up to the ICC).

Tanzania is hailed for its democratic ideals, but more so for its relative peace and ethnic harmony among its more than 100 tribes. Senegal is hailed as a key US ally in West Africa, and successful elections and transition last year reinforced the country’s reputation as a beacon of hope in the region. South Africa is of

Kenya to decide on future of oil refinery.

The future of Mombasa Oil refinery- East Africa's only oil refinery, could be decided next week when a report is due on whether to upgrade the aging Kenyan plant or turn it into a storage facility, the country's energy regulator has told Reuters.

Speaking to Reuters, Linus Gitonga, director of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), said the refinery would be converted into 'something more useful', including a storage facility, if the proposal for its upgrade turns out to be uneconomical.

“Fuel distributors say the refinery is operating below its 35,000 barrels per day capacity and some have

BBC Letter from Africa: A brighter future for Kenyans in Dubai?

President Uhuru Kenyatta has promised double digit growth.

Adapted from the BBC.
In our series of letters from Africa journalists, London-based Ugandan writer Joel Kibazo says he was surprised by the number of Kenyans he met during a visit to Dubai.

Every so often we all have what I call a "shaking-head moment", when something hits you and your mind can't quite adjust to what you are hearing or seeing.
A couple of weeks ago, I arrived in Dubai on a late flight and having checked into the hotel I decided only a wake-up call would save me from oversleeping and missing my first meeting the next day.

So, imagine my shock when I called the phone operator and upon confirming my name, he greeted me in Luganda, my mother tongue.
For a split second I could not compute where I was and he had to prompt me a couple of times before I responded about the wake-up call.

Introducing Bangla-Pesa; Kenya’s new beautiful currency

Bangla-Pesa: Image Source:qz.com
Adapted from qz.com. A new currency, The Bangla-Pesa, was introduced two weeks ago by a Mombasa-based NGO. It is not designed to be an alternative to the Kenyan shilling, but rather to complement it by boosting economic activity in Bangladesh- a crammed village in Mombasa, where shillings are scarce. Bangla-Pesa are scrip born out of mutual consent: some 200 businesses have agreed to accept the currency, and in return, each has been awarded a credit of 400 Bangla-Pesa.

That credit works like a zero-interest loan. Every new business that joins the Bangla-Pesa network must be supported by four guarantors who are already members. If the new business spends its 400 Bangla-Pesa, then fails to earn as much back, its guarantors must make up the difference, or all five businesses will be ejected from the network and forced to pay back the debt directly in goods and services.

The Bangla-Pesa has a direct predecessor in another Kenyan local currency, the Eco-Pesa. Eco-Pesa began circulating in August 2010 in Kongowea, which like Bangladesh, is made up of multiple

Why You Hate Your Career (And How to hate it Less).

That sick, sinking feeling you have when you have to get up and go to work means that something is wrong. Unfortunately, you're far from alone if you experience some stress every time your weekday alarm clock goes off. In short, there are a lot of office haters out there. If you are one of the office haters, here are some strategies to help you like your job, or at the very least, hate it a lot less.

Mix business and pleasure. Research shows that having even one friend at work greatly increases how happy people report they are about their jobs. So ditch the unrealistic advice not to mix business and friendships and go ahead and make friends.
